On Sunday, the whole Big Tilde editorial team gathered one last time in person at Comerica - with The Bad One, who provided amazing Champions Club tickets - and the one and only Suss made an off-hand statement while Clete Thomas was batting.

“This would be a great time for Clete to finally homer”

And so, Clete did just that with his next swing. Alas, we cursed Clete, as he is returning to the Mud Hens to free up some roster space for this guy that they are calling up from West Michigan.

In a couple of days, we’ll go into detail about the amazing Detroit Pants Party and we’ll gloss over the fact that the Tigers went 1-2 during the three games I attended. My computer has been getting repaired and I just got it back tonight. Look for the visual evidence of the weekend come tomorrow.

We prepared ourselves for moistness and we got cooked.  Nicely done on averting the rain, Detroit.  Now let’s talk about averting losing…

We’re not sure we can put this on Leyland for leaving Nate Robertson out an inning too long.  We weren’t quite aware of his impending implosion until it happened.  We also believe five runs should be enough to win a Major League Baseball game.  We are comfortable filing this under “Occasionally, ze sheet, she…. howyousay… happens when Nate Robertson pitches.”

However, we will be checking the batteries on Leyland’s mobility scooter today and possibly juicing up its engine so he can get out to the mound faster on his way back to a .500 record.

tstorms
Partly sunny through mid morning…then becoming mostly cloudy. A chance of showers and thunderstorms through early afternoon…then showers and thunderstorms likely. Highs 84 to 88…with a heat index around 90. Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph…turning to south…with gusts to 30 mph late. Chance of rain 70 percent.

Don’t make us come all the way over there and kick your butt, Detroit.  We’ll do it.

Jeff Tildish

Hair’s getting a little long there, Jeff Larish. I understand the need to fill the Big Tilde void by any means necessary, but c’mon, man. You’re a first baseman. And besides, that .356 slugging isn’t fooling anyone.

All right, fine. Just be on your best behavior. You’re new here. Maybe you’re a fan like the rest of us. Just don’t blow it.

By the way, did ANYBODY AT ALL see that Fox/Detroit clip of Tilde jogging in the outfield before Wednesday’s game? FSN showed it in super slo-mo, those curls flying in the breeze in a classic “Moving In Stereo” moment. MLB.tv has no recollection of it, they had blackout commercials rolling at the time. My God, what a sight.

DINGERS!

I think Mr. Carb-rera might be heating up a bit. Two homers tonight makes for four in the past five games. Thames chipped in with another (and 3 RBI) and the Pudge went yard as well. The latter two dingers also spell good news for my fake baseball team as well. Huzzah! HOWEVEH, the Tigers went off in the first game against Seattle (with JV on the mound) only to forget how to score runs the next three nights. That can’t happen tomorrow with the very hittable Eddie Bonine on the mound. Nor can it happen against the Twins the rest of the week.

With today’s win, JV improves to 6-9 and has his ERA down to 4.24, just a half run higher than his career-to-date average. His WHIP is back to 1.30 as well. Paul Byrd takes the mound for the Indians tomorrow as the Tigs aim for a 2 game mini-sweep.

Nate Robertson - you, good sir, deserve something better than a no-decision after that nice little performance. You gave us nine innings, threw exactly 100 pitches, only allowed one run, and yet all the Tigers could get you was one run in exchange.  Thankfully, Zoom Halen, Freddy Solid, Aqua Velva, and the TJE then combined for six innings of shut out relief work. Sadly, it took the M’s inserting a back-up catcher as their pitcher for the Tigers to finally get run number two across the plate. And with that, a rather disappointing week in the land of the Tilde came to a close. A 1-2 trip to the Hefty Bag followed with a 2-2 split at SafeCo field against the AL’s worst team - granted the M’s have been playing much better of late, but the fact remains we only got a split in spite of four solid performances from the starters. A very Tilde 4th of July weekend to you all. Please keep Todd Jones away from the fireworks.

In a bit of a rush today; we’re off to see the Tigers today.  At Henry Ford Hospital.  So here’s a moving pictures breakdown of last night’s extravaganza.  First, it started like this:

Then it turned into this:

Finally, we were treated to:

Oh, and a note to Roy Smalley: eat me.  You know how to play the game the right way?  Win.

We are getting mighty close to the very first Detroit Pants Party. In less than two weeks, we’ll all be roaming the SRO and shouting various invictives to the members of the Minnesota Twins. Also, our namesake, The Big Tilde, will still be out of commission for the Pants Party, but we won’t let it ruin our good time. Suss has promised* to have the TJE Mustache in full effect and I’ll offer up whatever bizarre facial hair Nate Robertson is sporting that day*. So, let’s review the particulars of the day, shall we?

State of the Tilde

“…the Tigers have a puncher’s chance of being back in this thing by the end of June. If they can pull of a 7-3 homestand and a pair of 4-2 trips after that, then they’ll have completed a 15-7 stretch and will be 39-42 heading into a stretch of 9 division games in July before the All-Star Break.”

So, it worked out a little bit better than that, no? An 8-2 homestand, 4-2 West Coast swing, and a 5-1 homestand later and our Tigers are above .500 for the first time all year. Standing tall at 41-40 at the halfway point of the season, the sins of May have all but been washed away. There’s been a glut of heroes from Marcus Thames’ amazing home run streak to the return of the Sheff. Eddie Bonine throwing a couple of nice performances and Justin Verlander returning to something resembling his old form. Old friends Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney came back and struggled at first, but seem to have settled back down. The Todd Jones Experience blew his first save and with it he almost blew the Tigers shot at returning to .500, only to have the Fat Man come through in the end. Continue Reading »
